The fruit that we just can’t get enough of at this time of year, whether we are cooking or baking! This weeks ingredient of the week: APPLES, provide not only an assortment of health benefits, yet also come in a huge variety of flavours!
Apples are loaded up with dietary fiber, vitamin C, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. This fruit is one of the best snacks out there, being portable, mess-free and keeping for a long period of time. I would recommend when in the grocery store finding apple that are local to you, since you would be surprised how far your apples could be travelling. Better yet, head to a local orchard! If you are in Ontario check out two of my favourite spots: Pine Farms Orchard and Downey’s Strawberry and Apple Farm.
While there is a huge assortment of apples to use, some are actually better than others for certain recipes. Such as for baking I would recommend using sweet yet tart apples such as; Granny Smith, Jonathans, Honey Crisp and Melrose. For salads I could recommend sweeter, juicier and more crisp apples such as; Fuji, Gala, Ambrosia and Golden Delicious. Lastly, for snacking I would recommend sweet, juicy and flavourful apples such as; Pink Lady, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and McIntosh.
Here are a few delicious apple recipes to try!
