Have you tried to beat your sugar cravings, but haven’t seen success? Not to worry, this will help! These are my 5 favourite tips that I use to keep my sugar cravings down, helping me to eat a cleaner and healthier diet. I consider myself an intense chocaholic, therefore believe me…if these tips can help me to kick the sweets with my strong love for chocolate, then I’m pretty confident that they can help with your cravings too!
TIP #1 – Fill up on water and tea
Keep yourself well hydrated throughout the day with water, to help fend off “boredom hunger”. If you are well hydrated with water and a craving pops up, then opt for a mug of your favourite tea instead. There are many great things about tea, including; it’s portable, there are thousands of flavours to choose from and it is much better for you than the sugary treat you would have been otherwise reaching for. I usually have tea after dinner, which distracts me from reaching for dessert.
TIP #2 – Keep healthy snacks close by
If the item that you are craving is within site, you are most likely going to have it. However if there are only nutritious snacks around you, this will make healthier decision making easier on yourself! Some of my favourite delicious and good-for-me snacks include; cold pressed juices (usually to beat a 3pm craving), fruits (bananas and apples are me go-to favourites either between breakfast and lunch or right after work) and snackable veggies (I am loving baby carrots, cherry tomatoes and cucumber right now).
TIP #3 – Try PUR chocolate gum
This gum is seriously good at helping to distract away from sugar cravings. It has the prefect balance between chocolate and peppermint, giving you the taste that you are craving (without the fat and calories) while freshening your breath at the same time! Find a pack here.
TIP #4 – Get more sleep
Think about it, the fewer hours you are awake for the less time you have to crave sugar! But also, the less sleep that you get the less energy you will have, therefore the more likely that you will reach for sugary snacks to wake you up.
TIP #5 – Keep sugar away from you
This is probably my most important and useful tip. The phrase “out of site, out of mind” is so essential here, being that if there was a block of milk chocolate in front of you, you would be far more likely to reach for it, than if it was in the store 5km away. If you surround myself with healthy choices, then you will make healthy choices.
